The past twenty-four hours have been big for Tekashi 6ix9ine. First, his song “FEFE” with Nicki Minaj dropped at midnight and then, at four am, he was kidnapped, robbed and hospitalized and now, the video for “FEFE” is out.
The art direction of the video is a Willy-Wonka style pastiche of mulitcoloured childish delights, with Nicki and Tekashi playing in a ball pit, posing with water-guns in a mushroom forest and linking arms while they eat ice cream cones. Murda Beatz even makes a little appearance.
Tekashi and Nicki both dial back the intensity of their flows on “FEFE,” 6ix9ine’s becoming almost a whisper and Nicki’s chilling out but retaining her usual cutthroat quality. Somehow, the two work well together. Maybe it’s because they’re from the same city, but the two very different rappers, who are also form different generations, compliment each other and seem comfortable teaming up on the song.
The video was released shortly after it came out that Tekashi had switched up the story of his mugging, possibly to make himself sound more tough. A couple days ago, when announcing the release of “FEFE”, Tekashi said “remind you, I’m in no beef right now. I’m in no beef. I’m into no type of publicity. Watch this shit go 8 for 8 on Billboard.” It may go 8 for 8, but the publicity of his kidnapping–fabricated or not–will doubtless have something to do with it.
